বিজ্ঞানীদের পিটিশন : ‘ভারতীয় জনগণ যুক্তি, বিজ্ঞান এবং বহুধা সংস্কৃতির ওপর আঘাত মেনে নেবে না’-songbadmanthan

যেভাবে আমাদের দেশে অসহিষ্ণুতা এবং বিজ্ঞান ও যুক্তির ক্ষয়ের বাতাবরণ তৈরি হচ্ছে, তাতে বিজ্ঞান-চর্চার মহল গভীরভাবে উদ্বিগ্ন। এই একই ধরনের অসহিষ্ণুতার বাতাবরণ এবং যুক্তির বর্জনেই দাদরিতে মোহাম্মদ আখলাক সাইফি-কে গণপিটুনি দিয়ে হত্যা করা হয়, অধ্যাপক কুল্বার্গি, ড. নরেন্দ্র দাভোলকার এবং শ্রী গোবিন্দ পানসারে-কে খুন করা হয়। এই তিনজনই কুসংস্কার এবং অজ্ঞানতাবাদ-এর বিরুদ্ধে সমাজে বৈজ্ঞানিক যুক্তিবোধ গড়ে তুলতে লড়াই চালিয়েছিলেন। অধ্যাপক কুল্বার্গি ছিলেন একজন বিখ্যাত গবেষক, এবং দ্বাদশ শতকের সংস্কারক বাসভ-এর বচন সাহিত্যে একজন বিশেষজ্ঞ। বাসভ সমাজের কাঠামোগত ধর্ম, জাতপাত এবং লিঙ্গ বৈষম্যের বিরোধিতা করেছিলেন। একইভাবে, ড. দাভোলকর এবং শ্রী পানসারে অন্ধ বিশ্বাস ও কুসংস্কারের বিরুদ্ধে লড়াই গড়ে তুলে সমাজে বৈজ্ঞানিক চিন্তার প্রসার ঘটিয়েছিলেন।

ভারতের সংবিধানের আর্টিকল ৫১ (এইচ) অনুযায়ী, নাগরিকদের মৌলিক কর্তব্যের অংশ হলো ‘… বৈজ্ঞানিক বোধ, মানবিকতা এবং জানার ইচ্ছা ও সংস্কারের বিকাশ’। দুর্ভাগ্যবশতঃ আমরা তার বদলে আজ যা দেখছি তা হলো — সরকারের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ কর্তাব্যক্তিদের প্রত্যক্ষ মদতে অযৌক্তিকতা ও সংকীর্ণতাবাদী চিন্তাভাবনার প্রসার।
একটি সত্যিকারের বহুধা সভ্যতা হলো ভারতীয় সভ্যতা। আমরা চিরকালই বহু ধরনের চর্চা এবং সমাজ একে অপরের জন্য জায়গা করে নিয়েছি। আমরা সমস্ত ধরনের বিশ্বাসের মানুষদের উৎসব এবং বাৎসরিক আড়ম্বর পালন করে এসেছি। এই একতা এবং শান্তি ইদানিং বিঘ্নিত হচ্ছে গাদা গাদা গোঁড়া কার্যকলাপ, সংখ্যালঘু এবং দলিতদের ওপর আন্দোলনের মধ্যে দিয়ে, যা থামার কোনো লক্ষণ নেই।
সাহিত্যিকরা তাদের প্রতিবাদের মধ্যে দিয়ে পথ দেখিয়েছেন। আমরা বিজ্ঞানীরা এবার তাদের সুরে গলা মেলাচ্ছি, একথা বলার জন্য যে ভারতীয় জনগণ যুক্তির ওপর, বিজ্ঞানের ওপর এবং আমাদের বহুধা সংস্কৃতির ওপর এই আঘাত মেনে নেবে না। আমরা ভারতবর্ষের এই ধ্বংসাত্মক এবং সংকীর্ণ দৃষ্টিকে বর্জন করছি, যা মানুষ কী পরবে কী ভাববে কী খাবে এবং কাকে ভালোবাসবে তা ঠিক করে দিতে চায়।
আমরা সমাজের সমস্ত অংশকে ভারতে যুক্তি ও বৈজ্ঞানিক বোধের ওপর ঘটে চলা এই আঘাতের বিরুদ্ধে গলা তুলতে আহ্বান জানাচ্ছি।

Statement by Scientists

The scientific community is deeply concerned with the climate of intolerance, and the ways in which science and reason are being eroded in the country.

It is the same climate of intolerance, and rejection of reason that has led to the lynching in Dadri of Mohammad Akhlaq Saifi and the assassinations of Prof. Kalburgi, Dr. Narendra Dabholkar and Shri Govind Pansare. All three fought against superstition and obscurantism to build a scientific temper in our society. Prof. Kalburgi was a renowned scholar and an authority on the Vachana literature associated with the 12th-century reformer Basava, who opposed institutionalised religion, caste and gender discrimination. Similarly, Dr. Dabholkar and Shri Pansare promoted scientific temper through their fight against superstition and blind faith.

The Indian Constitution in Article 51 A (h) demands, as a part of the fundamental duties of the citizens, that we '...develop the scientific temper, humanism and the spirit of inquiry and reform'. Unfortunately, what we are witnessing instead is the active promotion of irrational and sectarian thought by important functionaries of the government.

The Indian civilization is a truly plural one. We have always had many practices and communities that have allowed space for each other; we celebrate the festivals and anniversaries of all faiths. This unity and peace has now been disturbed by a rash of bigoted acts, attacks on minorities and Dalits, which show no signs of abating.

The writers have shown the way with their protests. We scientists now join our voices to theirs, to assert that the Indian people will not accept such attacks on reason, science and our plural culture. We reject the destructive narrow view of India that seeks to dictate what people will wear, think, eat and who they will love.

We appeal to all other sections of society to raise their voice against the assault on reason and scientific temper we are witnessing in India today.
